Un nuevo revestimiento para ventanas bloquea la luz ultravioleta e infrarroja que genera calor y deja pasar la luz visible, independientemente del ángulo con el que llegue la luz directa del Sol. El revestimiento puede incorporarse a las ventanas ya existentes y es capaz de reducir los costes de refrigeración del aire acondicionado en más de un tercio en climas cálidos.
Este avance es obra de un equipo integrado, entre otros, por Tengfei Luo y Seongmin Kim, de la Universidad de Notre Dame en Indiana, Estados Unidos. El nuevo revestimiento es una versión perfeccionada de una versión previa más primitiva.
El ángulo entre una ventana y la luz directa del Sol siempre está cambiando, algo para lo cual otros recubrimientos similares al nuevo no están preparados. "Nuestro recubrimiento mantiene la funcionalidad y la eficiencia sea cual sea la posición del Sol en el cielo", subraya Luo.
En las pruebas realizadas, el nuevo recubrimiento redujo la temperatura entre 5,4 y 7,2 grados centígrados, manteniendo la transparencia en todo momento.
La reducción de temperatura no será la misma para todas las habitaciones, pero en cualquier caso el efecto refrigerante es significativo.
El recubrimiento también es aplicable a las ventanas de automóviles, camiones y otros vehículos.
El diseño del recubrimiento se ha hecho con la ayuda de una inteligencia artificial.
